Hello! This is a bit unrelated to my weekly and monthly challenges, but I wanted to share something with you, and potentially update this so that y’all can have a bit more context for my life, and why I started these challenges in the first place!
Almost six years ago I started getting Vertigo- “a dizzying sensation of tilting within stable surroundings or of being in tilting or spinning surroundings.” -Dictionary.com.
After being told I had ‘Vertigo’ I spent over two and a half years, countless doctors, tests, tears, and money to reach the conclusion that the vertigo was caused by something called Vestibular Migraines. When I explained to my neurologist (the third that I’ve seen) she was shocked to hear how often my migraines occur, which left me to discover that my case is pretty severe in regards to how often I get them.
A definition that I’ve found “A vestibular migraine is a nervous system problem that causes repeated dizziness (or vertigo) in people who have a history of migraine symptoms. Unlike traditional migraines, you may not always have a headache.” it also listed common symptoms that come with the vertigo:
- “Dizziness that lasts more than a few minutes
- Nausea and vomiting
- Balance problems
- Extreme motion sensitivity — feeling sick or dizzy when you move your head, eyes, or body
- Feeling disoriented or confused
- Feeling unsteady, like you’re in a rocking boat
- Sensitivity to sound”
This disease can be extremely debilitating, but I’ve realized that even though I have this, I’m extremely lucky. I have an amazing family, friends, and even employers. Having so much support, and me finally getting to a better place with my health has inspired me to start this blog, and to try to make myself better every week and every month.
With and Without
This is a photography project I’ve been working on to try and show what life is like with and without vertigo. I hope to continue to add to this and help people understand a little bit better what vestibular disorders look and feel like.
